We have worked for four decades in welcoming, protecting and integrating refugees, with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In the face of the serious global migration crisis, we need as much help as possible. Today we face a new crisis, unprecedented: the pandemic of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) has made the lives of displaced people even more vulnerable. In Brazil, many of them were informal workers, who could no longer work with the need of social distance. Others were fired from their jobs. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have received a large number of messages from refugees needing help to survive.
To respond to this serious situation, we launched an emergency crowdfunding campaign at Kickante platform to raise funds, with the support of Abraço Cultural language course, social startup TOTI, the Association of Public Defenders of the State of Rio de Janeiro (ADPERJ) and Sociedade de Beneficência Humboldt, sponsor of Cruzeiro school. The goal is to raise 55,000 reais and help 100 refugee families, who will be able to buy food, medicine, hygiene products, or to pay the rent.
Our Assistance Program for Refugees and Asylum Seekers does a pioneering and unique work in Brazil. Here, refugees are welcomed the moment they arrive, receiving guidance and support to restructure their lives with dignity.
